We’re proud to celebrate a major professional milestone for one of our valuable team members. Sales Executive Thomas Russell has officially earned his Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) designation, with graduation taking place on May 9 at the NPTC Annual Convention.

The CTP certification, offered through the National Private Truck Council (NPTC), is the only credential of its kind designed specifically for private fleet professionals, including fleet managers, transportation leaders, and industry partners. It represents a deep understanding of the complex, ever-evolving transportation and logistics landscape, from fleet operations and safety to compliance, finance, and technology.

What the Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) Designation Really Means

Earning a Certified Transportation Professional designation is more than passing an exam. It’s about gaining a comprehensive view of how fleet management and transportation systems truly function.

The program, administered by the Institute for Truck Transportation Management, equips professionals with the knowledge to:

  • Evaluate cost per mile and total cost of ownership

  • Improve fleet operational efficiency

  • Strengthen transportation compliance and safety programs

  • Build more strategic, data-driven transportation operations

For customers and partners, the CTP credential signals credibility. It demonstrates that the person they are working with understands the realities of fleet operations, trucking regulations, and logistics strategy, and is committed to delivering meaningful insights.

Seeing the Bigger Picture in Fleet Operations

For Thomas, pursuing the CTP certification was about more than professional growth. It was a personal commitment to strengthening his knowledge of transportation management and fleet performance.

Through the process, he gained a deeper appreciation for how interconnected the trucking and transportation industry really is. What may seem like a straightforward operation, moving freight from point A to point B, is a highly coordinated system where every decision impacts cost, efficiency, and service levels.

One concept that stood out most was cost per mile. While often viewed as a simple metric, it reflects nearly every aspect of a fleet’s performance, including:

  • Fuel costs

  • Maintenance and asset utilization

  • Driver wages and retention

  • Insurance and risk management

  • Operational decision-making

It’s a powerful reminder that even small improvements can drive significant gains across an entire fleet operation.

Discipline, Growth, and Commitment in the Transportation Industry

Balancing exam preparation with the demands of a fast-paced sales role is not easy. Like many in the transportation industry, Tommy had to navigate a packed schedule while staying disciplined and focused on long-term goals.

That meant:

  • Creating structure and managing time intentionally

  • Staying consistent during peak workloads

  • Maintaining energy and focus without burning out

This level of discipline is exactly what makes the Certified Transportation Professional certification such a meaningful achievement.

Becoming a Better Partner to Fleet Leaders

One of the biggest takeaways from the experience is how it’s already shaping the way Tommy connects with customers in the fleet management and logistics space.

“I’m able to speak their language better, ask smarter questions, and focus on the operational and financial issues that matter most to them,” says Russell.

With a stronger understanding of fleet operations, compliance requirements, and transportation costs, he’s able to have more informed conversations that go beyond surface-level discussions.

It’s not just about selling. It’s about being a knowledgeable, trusted partner who understands the challenges of running a fleet and managing transportation operations.

The CTP also reinforces something we strongly believe in at Pedigree Technologies: continuing education in the transportation industry matters. Staying informed on trends, regulations, and operational challenges allows our team to deliver real value—whether in a demo, a strategy conversation, or day-to-day support.

Why CTP Certification Matters for the Future of Transportation

The transportation and logistics industry doesn’t stand still, and neither should the people in it.

Certifications like the Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) play a critical role in:

  • Raising the standard for fleet management professionals

  • Strengthening trust across the transportation industry

  • Driving smarter, more efficient operations

For anyone considering the program, the message is simple: it’s worth it. While it requires time and commitment, the knowledge gained and perspective developed make it a long-term investment in both individual growth and fleet performance excellence.
