Safety Spotlight: Tire Health and Roadcheck Readiness

Each year, the CVSA International Roadcheck shines a spotlight on key areas of safety, giving fleets an opportunity to tighten their processes and prevent costly violations. This year’s vehicle focus? Tire health.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), tire-related issues cause approximately 11,000 crashes and result in nearly 200 fatalities each year in the U.S. alone. For fleets, that’s a critical reminder that tire maintenance is not just a compliance issue, it’s a serious safety concern.

What Inspectors Are Looking For

From May 13–15, inspectors across North America will be checking commercial vehicles with an emphasis on tire condition. During the Level I Inspection, they’ll examine:

  • Tire tread depth

  • Proper tire inflation

  • Signs of damage include:

    • Tread separation

    • Air leaks

    • Cuts, bulges, and sidewall damage

    • Improper or temporary repairs

These tire-related issues are among the top reasons vehicles are placed out of service each year. That makes this Roadcheck an ideal time to reinforce tire maintenance best practices.

Why It Matters

Tire failures don't just cause delays, they can create hazardous situations, increase fuel consumption, and damage other components like wheel ends and suspensions. Routine checks and proper tire care help reduce operating costs, improve safety, and keep your fleet inspection-ready.

How Technology Can Help

Modern tire monitoring systems, like TPMS, can provide real-time visibility into tire pressure and temperature, helping you catch problems before they lead to failure. Pairing TPMS with fleet management software enables:

  • Instant alerts for low pressure or high temperature.

  • Historical data on tire performance and maintenance.

  • Automated reporting for compliance documentation.

Be Inspection-Ready

Before the Roadcheck begins:

  • Conduct internal tire inspections across your fleet.

  • Verify proper inflation and tread depth.

  • Check for visible damage or signs of wear.

  • Ensure repair records are up to date.

Fleets that stay proactive will avoid costly violations and, more importantly, keep their drivers and the public safe.
